Frequently Asked Questions

What should my child wear to school?

Thank you for accepting the uniform as part of your child’s attire. Uniform pants will fit in nicely with the daily schedule at GSCELC which encourages children to explore many different types of activities and materials. Some of these materials, such as painting, sand and water play, have the potential to make its way on to your child’s clothes. Also, a pair of gym shoes/outdoor shoes is recommended to be stored at school so that your child does not need to worry about ruining good school shoes.

During the day, children also have an outside play time when weather permits. Please dress your child appropriately for outside play for their safety and the enjoyment of the experience. During the spring and summer, children need to wear tennis shoes while outside and are encouraged to brings hats and sunglasses if desired. If it has rained, children may want to bring rain boots so they can participate in any outdoor experiences that may occur. In the winter months, children will need to have coats, gloves, hats, and snow boots available.

Please send a complete change of clothes to be kept at school in the event your child’s clothes become wet or soiled. Also, each child should have a school bag, marked with their name and address, making it easier for them to carry things to and from home and school.

How do I communicate with the teacher?
The staff wants to have regular and ongoing communication with parents. A folder will be provided to each child for use throughout the school year that will allow families to communicate with their child’s teacher. Each teacher will complete weekly a blog that will update families on the activities of the classroom and upcoming events. If a teacher needs to send home a note or update specific to a child, this will be done in the child’s folder as needed. Families are encouraged to use the folder to share home information with the teachers by sending notes with the children in the folder. Parents are welcome at all times; however, if you would like a conference, please contact your child’s teacher before or after school. A monthly program newsletter and classroom updates will also be sent home for families.

How will I know how my child is progressing?
We believe that the key to every student’s success is communication. We will notify you of your child’s progress through four progress report cards. We urge you to monitor your child’s daily progress, homework, in-class assessments and teacher notes. Staff will update you through notes home, telephone calls, and conferences. If you are interested in more frequent updates, please contact your child’s teacher.

Children shall be provided with many opportunities to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiating, and talking with the person involved to solve interpersonal problems. Teachers shall facilitate the development of these positive social skills at all times. The following model outlines the various levels of support that are put into place to ensure that staff have a framework in which to use proactive strategies that build children's ability to demonstrate positive behaviors and support children's social emotional development.
