“Music gives wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything” (Plato)

Music is a great companion to inquiry based learning and true discovery at The Greater Summit County Early Learning Center and our S.C.O.P.E. Academy Preschool. We feel that the way we strive to integrate music as a learning tool across the curriculum helps stimulate learning and add diversity to the learning process. We are very proud to show you our Music Community Room and the way it carries music all through the building. Children of all ages and abilities in our classrooms can find their starting place through music. We have a broad and rich variety of musical instruments that represent many cultures around our world for children to investigate in our Music Community Room.

Children can often be spotted carrying musical instruments from home to school or sharing their student generated instruments from their center project work to share and play their musical creations for all to enjoy. Children enjoy and benefit from opportunities to construct instruments using recycled materials as they explore sounds. We believe that children should be encouraged to experiment with objects around them for use as musical instrument. Possibilities are limitless. . Music seems to be even more rewarding for them when they pick out a favorite tune on an instrument they designed and built themselves. Every child should feel free to explore all the sound possibilities in his immediate environment. Before we know it, we have cooperative groups forming all about our classrooms and music community room generated by the opportunities music creates. Musical activities are part of the sheer fun of being young and young at heart. We have learned quickly here at our site, that allowing opportunities for singing, chanting, jumping or dancing, stimulates children’s musical development and human development.

We aim to make music in our environment to be welcoming, participatory, and noncompetitive. Children will take on their own natural starting points. Through our implementation of music, we have found that music is quite capable of cultivating better disciplined and harder working citizens, it increases self-esteem in our children, aids toward increased higher level thinking abilities, captivates our goals for cooperative learning, and truly develops lifelong learning abilities and to enrich our students everyday lives.

We believe that music offers tremendous benefits to children, academically, socially, and emotionally. Research indicates that neglect of that development in early childhood causes an irreversible loss of that potential. Music creates listeners and learners in our children and provides numerous benefits that we promise to have it be a permanent part of our educational delivery system. Children assimilate music in much the same way that they learn language during their first five years of life. It is important that music and movement be blended into their daily routine in those early years regardless of their coordination in moving or skill in singing.

As part of our focus and promise to you to bring 21st century skills and opportunities to our children here at school, we realize that the world of technology has much to offer in the area of musical pleasure, creation, and instruction. We are securing appropriate software and seeking out technology that will help us implement a motivating technology program with music so that children can learn and acquire increased knowledge and opportunities and create their own music on the computer. Mr. Tom is our Technology resource person and holds a Master’s Degree in Music Technology. We look forward to the technology he brings our way related to music experiences for our children.

We are happy to say that our community room and music exploration efforts in our classrooms, seem to be creating happier dispositions throughout the day, causing children to take more risks delving into their own creativity, and demonstrate more sensitivity and awareness to everything and everyone around them. We have quiet music playing in the classroom most times to provide a sense of peace and serenity. We find that music helps ease the strain of difficult days, calms students down, or energizes them.

Please contact us if you have an interest in sharing your musical talents, have some musical selections, instruments, or musical technology to share or just want to come together with us through music.
