Congressman Tim Ryan recently visited the Summit County ESC and discussed his continued support of mindful learning education for both children and adults. Mindful learning, also known as mindfulness, in school environments is based on social and emotional learning practices and helps children develop awareness and the ability to regulate emotional responses.

“I believe this is the next generation of transformational policy change. I’ve seen this practice transform classrooms, and now it is helping veterans. It allows us to process trauma and also allows the space needed between stimulus and response to make better decisions,” said Congressman Ryan.

According to researchers Janice Houlihan and Dr. Laura Bakosh, co-founders of the nonprofit organization Inner Explorer, which offers mindfulness programs for schools, anti-bullying programs and legislation in America do not get to the heart of bullying.

Inner Explorer’s research has shown many initiatives appear to be comprehensive—students learn what constitutes bullying and where to find help—although the gap needs to be bridged between what students know and what they do.

“Over time, mindfulness practices help everyone involved in the bullying triad—the bully, the victim and the witness,” said Houlihan.

Ryan explained, “This is the beginning of something transformational in education. The Inner Explorer Program allows us to monitor, study and see the results. We are not going to change neighborhoods until we get kids in our schools and teach them how to behave in neighborhoods.”
