Safe and Positive Schools Coalition

On Friday, February 27th, over 200 students and 50 Superintendents,
Administrators, Counselors, Teachers and Advisors, from Summit County school
districts attended the Third Annual Leadership Rally put on by the Student
Coalition for Positive & Safe Schools (SCPSS). The rally was held at the
Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls and was led by Guy Burney
, Val Burney
of the Ohio Network: Training and Assistance for Schools and
Communities (ONTASC). The keynote speaker and presenter for the day was Dr.
, President of the International Center for Leadership in
Education Inc. Dr. Daggett is recognized worldwide for his proven ability to
move education systems toward more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge
for all students.
The rally which had the theme of Survivor: Madagascar was kicked off with
performances by the Green High School Drum Corp and Dance Line and the Barberton
High School Cheerleaders. Following the opening activities, Dr. Daggett
addressed the audience about the huge challenges that students are faced with in
this Global Economy. Dr. Daggett, who was one of four presenters for the
concurrent breakout sessions, spoke in small groups about rigor and relevance in
the classroom and addressed any questions that were posed. Susan Tucker, from
the Summit County Domestic Court did a session on Bullying and Harassment,
ONTASC did a session on Non-Academic Barriers such as poverty and Michael
Herchik from the SCESC did a session on Positive Schools.
The day ended with closing activities and an energized group of students and
staff returning to their home schools to continue the work on making schools a
positive and safe place. The high schools that have participated in the SCPSS
are as follows: Barberton, Coventry, Cuyahoga Falls, Green, Mogadore, Norton,
Revere, Springfield, Stow-Munroe Falls and Tallmadge.
