Recommended Uses of the Proficiency Test Data Analysis

As the Summit County Educational Service Center began to work with Ohio Proficiency Test data, it felt there was a need to frame its position on the use of this data. The following are these recommended uses:

The purpose of the proficiency test data analysis is to provide information that can be used to identify needs and strengths to guide improvement. The data from these tests suggest directions that may be taken to improve the educational programs, student performance, and the quality of the work given to students
Proficiency test results should not be used for the evaluation of teachers
Use of the Proficiency test results should focus more emphasis on the identification and reporting of educational progress and growth, rather than the comparisons of individuals, schools, or districts
