In the year 2000, eleven districts working with the Summit County Educational Service Center developed a Science Course of Study (COS) that would support attainment of Ohio Proficiency Learner Outcomes. The eleven district consortium developed a scope and sequence** that would equally divide mastery of the life, earth and space, and physical science content across two grade levels (either grades 3-4 or 5-6, depending on the level of the proficiency test). The Nature of Science skills would be supported across all grade levels.
Grades
This column indicates what grade level students will show mastery of specific scientific content or processes, according to the 2000 Summit County Science Course of Study.
Summit County COS Content
This column indicates what specific scientific content or processes are supposed to be mastered by the students (e.g., simple machines, Newton’s Laws of Motion, chemical reactions, etc.).

Newton's Laws of Motion: Mechanical Advantage of Simple Machines

This scope and sequence may vary according to districts that DO NOT follow the 2000 Summit County Science COS. However, all of the topics listed (e.g., simple machines, Newton’s Laws of Motion, chemical reactions, etc.) MUST BE taught in EVERY district in Ohio. You may want to change the information in the “Grade Level” column to match your own district’s COS scope and sequence**, keeping in mind that you should not be missing any “Content” from your curriculum.
|
**NOTE: This scope and sequence may change when the state science standards are finalized/adopted in December 2002.
